HOW MANY TYPES OF MOVING HEAD LIGHTS ARE THERE?
In stage lighting systems for events, there are four types of moving head lights, classified based on their function and the type of bulb used.
- Halogen Moving Head Lights : These lights use halogen bulbs, offer the best brightness, have the ability to adjust brightness, zoom in and out, and focus the beam of light. They are commonly used in bars and nightclubs.
- LED Moving Head Lights: These lights are more durable due to the use of super-bright LED bulbs with a lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours, offering fast color changes and quick flashing while consuming less electricity. However, they are quite expensive.
- Laser Moving Head Lights: These use laser bulbs to create effects and can be used or mounted in the center of a stage, bar, or nightclub, creating laser beams at any angle.
- Moving Head with Smoke: This type doesn't use lights, but is equipped with a smoke-generating device capable of spraying smoke from various angles on the stage.
THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF STAGE MOVING HEAD LIGHTS
1. Moving beam light 230
The 230W moving beam light is very popular in all kinds of events. Moving beam lights are used to create decorative patterns and accents on stage. The 230W beam light uses a super bright 230W 7R beam bulb. It has 14 color wheels plus a white color and 17 gobo patterns, with each gobo containing 2 or 3 overlapping patterns. The light has 3 operating modes: automatic, music-synchronized, and DMX control. For the best visual effect, the 230W beam light must be controlled via a dedicated system; automatic or music-synchronized modes will not produce the best results.
2. 260 Moving Beam Light
Currently, a new line of 260 4D moving beam lights has appeared on the market with outstanding advantages such as high light intensity, unique patterns, and multiple colors. The design of the light is also very sophisticated and elegant. The 260 moving beam light is an upgrade from the 230 moving beam light but at a lower price while maintaining high light intensity.
3. 90w Moving Head Spot Light
The 90W moving LED light uses 50W LEDs with a lifespan of over 50,000 hours, features 14 color wheels and 17 gobo patterns. The light has a compact, aesthetically pleasing design and is easy to install.
4. 350w Moving Beam Light
The 350 series moving beam lights use ultra-bright 17R bulbs combined with unique color-changing logo effects.
5. Triangular 9-eye moving head light
The 9-eye triangular moving head light is currently the most popular type of light used in karaoke rooms and mini-bars. When running, the light creates 9 streams of color-changing, converging and exiting light, adding a unique and vibrant atmosphere to the space.
TERMS TO NOTE WHEN USING MOVING HEADLIGHTS
For easy use of moving head lights, especially high-powered ones, we need to know the following terms:
1. Pan - Tilt: these are two terms related to control.
- Pan refers to the left-right rotation capability of the light; it may rotate approximately 1.5 times or may rotate continuously without stopping.
- Tilt refers to the ability of the light to rotate up and down; the light can rotate half a turn or continuously in modern moving head models.
2. Fine Pan - Fine Tilt: This feature is used on moving head control devices such as DMX consoles and Sunlite, and when activated, it helps the moving head rotate more smoothly.
3. RePan – ReTilt: Used when there are two or more moving head lights, this feature allows the lights to be positioned symmetrically: left - right, up - down.
4. Frost (wash): This function blurs the light. The moving head is equipped with a frosted lens that blurs the light, making the beam less harsh. Additionally, this function can be used for background lighting as an alternative to headlights.

5. Spot: A moving head is equipped with a lens to emit a focused beam of light, but the further away from the light source, the larger the diameter of the beam becomes. The diameter of the circle at the point of light emission will be much smaller than the circle projected onto the wall.
6. Beam: Similar to spot, but with a different lens design, the light will create a sharp, extremely bright beam that shines far, producing spectacular light effects for stages, bars, and nightclubs.
7. Gobo: Moving head devices are equipped with a metal disc engraved with various shapes: flowers, stars, circles, or artistic symbols. These engraved shapes allow light to pass through and project onto the wall. There are two types of Gobo discs:
- Fix Gobo: This type of gobo disc cannot be rotated from the gobo itself; only one gobo at a time can be moved.
- Rotate Gobo: This is a type of gobo disc designed in a wheel shape. It not only functions to change gobos, but each gobo can also rotate independently.
8. Shutter: This refers to the flashing capability of the light. For halogen moving head lights, since the bulb doesn't turn off automatically, two metal levers are used in front of the bulb to open and close at varying speeds thanks to an internal motor, creating the flashing effect. LED moving head lights are easier to operate as the bulb can be switched on and off quickly.
9. Color: The color of the light emitted by the lamp. Halogen moving head lights all have a metal disc with many small circles cut out, each circle equipped with a color filter. When light passes through a color filter, that color is projected onto the wall. For LED moving head lights, because LED bulbs are capable of emitting and mixing colors, these color filters are not needed.
10. Prism: The moving head will be equipped with a lens that can multiply the emitted beams into eight, creating eight identical shapes when projected onto a wall, which could be circles or gobos. It can also be combined with a color disc to change the colors.
11. Iris: This light is equipped with a lens capable of tripling the light beam or gobo, and is also equipped with a motor to rotate the prism after tripling or tripling several lines. Additionally, the Moving Head is equipped with a Rotate Gobo disc, which can simultaneously rotate the internal gobo and perform the tripling.
12. Focus (Zoom): Inside the light is a clear glass lens used to clarify the gobo images, the circular projections of the moving head.
13. Reset: Restart the lights
14. Shake Gobo: The Gobo shaking feature of the light.
